Brook Fete 2009

The morning of the 63rd Brook Fete dawned overcast and cool and by 9:30 it was beginning to drizzle, followed by a heavy shower. Thoughts of “oh no, not again!” after two previous rainy fetes as the tea tent went up and stall-holders began to arrive were in most minds. By midday, it was dry and warm and by the time the first visitors arrived shortly after 1:00 the sun was well and truly in control.
The good weather coupled with the beer festival at The Dog and Pheasant opposite brought large numbers of people, all looking for a bargain or a good time. The hamburger stall sold out by 4:30 and the Pimms tent sold out, twice!
There were the usual tombola, hamburgers and ice creams, bric-a-brac, books, bottle hoop-la, plants and ever popular dog show. There were also more childrens’ rides, the Pirrie Market for the second year, a silent auction, whiskey raffle, Grand Draw and stalls for glass-painting, jewellery, coffee, curry sauces and many more. The revival of the tug-o-war between The Dog and Pheasant, The Three Horse Shoes and The White Hart resulted in a win for “The Dog” so home pride was preserved. Surrey Fire and Rescue provided the usual fire appliance and the Police came with two vehicles – to the delight of the younger visitors while the older ones drooled over the vintage cars.
By the time the fete closed at 5:00, it was reckoned to be a resounding success with bumper takings, all to support the continued refurbishment and general support of The Pirrie Hall.
We look forward to welcoming you to the 64th Brook Fete next year.

Spring Event

The Spring Event was attended by a lively gathering of people feeling the onset of warmer weather and out for an evening of fun. The Hall was laid out in true Spring fashion with large bunches of daffodils on every table, ivy, four huge brass lanterns with candles and as the centre-piece of the serving table a large candelabra. A buffet meal with wine was followed by a raffle and dancing till midnight. A good time was had by all with a small profit going towards continued refurbishment of the Hall.

Family Day September 2009

The third Brook Family Day was even better attended that the previous year. Apart from some new arrivals in Brook the children were bigger (my, how you’ve grown!) and there were several new/recently born including twins. The bouncy castle was as popular as ever and received the usual attention from a multitude of pounding feet. Whilst the children were otherwise occupied and supervised the parents were able to chat to people they had not seen for some time and get to know the newcomers. The barbecue was a chance for the men to display their culinary skill, share and exchange sausages, hamburgers and so on. So much food was on offer that even the children had to call quits by the end of the day so the dogs and foxes had a treat. Free ice-cream was enjoyed by all. By the time the blankets, tables and chairs were being packed away it was agreed that a good time had been enjoyed by all.

Christmas Tree Lighting 2009

The Christmas tree lighting took place on 27th November and was a great success. The rain held off though the field was rather wet and muddy in places but this did not deter the more adventurous children from exploring the field with the aid of torches. More people than ever attended and this year we had the pleasure of the King Edward’s School Choir leading the carols accompanied by a keyboard. The event was opened by Clr. Steve Dale and the Rev. Anne Fraser gave a short lesson on the meaning of the event as well as blessing the tree and leading the carols. Afterwards, mulled wine and mince pies were enjoyed in the warmth of the hall. The tree is a gift from Witley Parish Council and the refreshments provided by Witley Parish Council and The Dog and Pheasant to whom we are indebted for their generosity. The tree lighting is an integral part of Brook and Sandhills life and provides an opportunity for children to enjoy themselves in the spirit of the season, adults to meet friends and give us all a chance to reflect.
